César Pelli, the genius behind Armani Residences in Miami died at 92

César Pelli, the prolific and brilliant Argentine architect, died at 92 on July 19, 2019. Among his most famous works are the famous Twin Towers of Kuala Lumpur, the expansion of MoMA, various skyscrapers in New York and around the world and even two architectural jewels in Miami, the Adrienne Arsht Center and Armani Residences, which made it worthy of dozens of professional and academic awards.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is a great cultural complex dedicated to the performing arts (opera, ballet and concerts) that is located in Miami, Armani Residences Sunny Isles, on the other hand is a condo tower for sale and rent that consists of 57 floors, whose beauty and luxury are really unique.

This residential project currently under construction, combines the talent of César Pelli and the elegance of the no less famous and talented designer Giorgio Armani. The union of both celebrities conceived a glamorous and elegant building in a minimalist style, which has the best location (18975 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160), just in front of the sea to give more attractive views.

Armani Residences will have the best amenities in its interior and exterior spaces. Unit prices in this architectural jewel range from $ 2,200,000 and up. It is a unique work that could only be the result of the talent of two celebrities, where living will undoubtedly be an insurmountable experience too.

Extensive world class workmanship

The works of the famous Argentine architect, include the towers of the World Financial Center, renamed Brookfield Place, in Battery Park City, New York; as well as the Winter Garden Atrium, the vaulted pavilion with a glass roof in the center; Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport and the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, famous for its well-known bright blue glass facade.

César Pelli designed countless famous buildings not only in the United States but around the world. Sample of them are the United States Embassy in Tokyo and the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center in Vassar, being mostly known for its designs and projects of impressive skyscrapers that today dominate the horizons of several cities in the world.

They include the famous Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, which from 1998 to 2004 were listed as the tallest buildings in the world. Other of his famous designs are the Carnegie Hall tower in New York along with the Salesforce Tower, the tallest building in San Francisco and the International Finance Center in Hong Kong.

He also designed other spectacular towers and skyscrapers such as One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, London; the Wells Fargo tower in Minneapolis; the Goldman Sachs tower in Jersey City, the UniCredit Tower in Milan and the Banco Macro Tower in Buenos Aires.

With these and many other designs, Pelli won countless architecture awards in recognition of his creations, including the Architecture Firm Award (1989) and the American Institute of Architects gold medal in 1995.

Late but certain success

It was not until after 50 years that Pelli opened his own firm Cesar Pelli & Associates, which began to savor success for his brilliant designs. Forced by circumstances as he confessed, because he was hired to direct the renovation and expansion project of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) in 1977.

The firm grew to become architects Pelli Clarke Pelli, which included his son Rafael and his partner Fred Clarke, which worked in a modest New Haven building in New York, very close to the Yale School of Architecture, where Pelli served and remained as dean until his death.

The MoMA project was not what Pelli expected, since in 2002 part of the new design of the building was demolished and replaced by a larger structure designed by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Although Pelli claimed not to be hurt by this loss – because he assumed it as a necessity for the museum’s new purposes – he nonetheless exclaimed that “life is full of surprises.

César Pelli and his wife Diana Balmori, also an architect, who accompanied him throughout his life, arrived in the United States in 1952, from Tucumán, Argentina. He had plans to study at the school of architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then return to his country when he finished his nine-month scholarship.

Although Pelli was an enthusiastic and talented modernist creator, who stood out for the development of great projects with glass, especially colors, he initially was a bit pessimistic about his career. However, his work was praised inside and outside the United States and continued to evolve every day, particularly in skyscraper design.

The famous Argentine architect was born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, on October 12, 1926. It was a modest city like his family (his father a public official and his mother a teacher. After leaving for the US to continue With their training, the couple decided not to return anymore due to the academic and professional occupations of both.

Pelli and his wife Balmori had two children: Denis, professor of psychology and neural science at the University of New York and Rafael, the architect. In 2001 the couple divorced but continued to collaborate on various joint projects. In 2016, Ms. Balmori died.

His work was a constant search for aesthetic expression with a subtle mixture of past and present in some skyscrapers. Pelli always believed that the architectural design of buildings should serve to meet the needs of the owners and this, instead of a weakness, considered him a “source of strength.”
